The GRQ6 data centre in Eemshaven, Groningen, is part of Google’s expanding European digital infrastructure and represents a major hyperscale facility supporting cloud computing, data storage, and global digital services. Strategically located in the Netherlands, the site benefits from strong energy infrastructure, available space for expansion, and its position as a key European digital hub. The project is designed to meet extremely high standards of reliability, energy efficiency, scalability, and continuous 24/7 operation.
Within this project, our client is engaged as a UK-based mechanical contractor responsible for delivering the mechanical installation works. Their role is critical in ensuring that the building services infrastructure is installed to the required technical, safety, and quality standards needed for a facility of this scale and complexity.
The mechanical scope of work includes the installation of multiple pipework systems, each selected based on its function and application within the data centre environment. Screwed steel pipework is used for robust mechanical distribution systems where strength and pressure resistance are essential. Copper pipework is installed in smaller diameter systems requiring corrosion resistance and precision. HDPE pipework is used for underground and external applications due to its durability, flexibility, and chemical resistance, typically installed using fusion welding techniques. In addition, plastic solvent-welded pipework is used for low-pressure systems such as drainage and general services, where secure and sealed joints are required.
Our client’s responsibilities include the installation and integration of these mechanical pipework systems, coordination with international contractors and engineering teams, adherence to strict project specifications, and compliance with rigorous site safety and access procedures. They also play a key role in supporting the overall programme delivery, ensuring that installation activities are carried out efficiently and in line with project sequencing requirements.
Overall, the GRQ6 data centre is a strategically significant development that strengthens the Netherlands’ position as a leading hub for digital infrastructure in Europe. The collaboration between Google and specialist contractors such as our client enables the delivery of highly complex mechanical systems that are essential for the performance, resilience, and long-term operation of the facility.
